It has been an excited year at Wayne Thomas IMC! We have been busy reading, checking out books, and embracing new innovating technology. We were very fortunate this year to celebrate Children’s Book Week, Dr. Seuss’s Birthday, the Read-a-Thon and continued to collaborate with teachers to create meaningful research units.
Oh the places we went this year with research units! It is wonderful to see the students retaining prior knowledge of what we started last year. First graders worked with each other to discover facts about the Sun, Moon and Stars and then used kidspiration to produce a classroom book. Second graders researched habitats of a variety of animals. Then they wrote an expository report and complied a classroom power point. Our third graders were able to do a variety of research projects; my favorite was the Biography/Timeliner. Each student read a biography then had to discuss important facts about their person in history. Once the research was completed, they took their findings and used timeliner to enhance their report. Fourth graders are always busy with different projects, from learning and about Illinois to working with each other and creating imovies and power points from the Southeastern region of the United States. Our last grade that participated with the IMC was our Fifth graders. We studied Native American tribes, Explorers, Human Anatomy and did multiply book talks this year. My favorite project was having each students create a book talk and present it in front of their peers.

This fall we were very fortunate to have a visit from one of my favorite children book author’s Patricia Polacco. She gave the students insight into the writing process. She spoke about her childhood and shared with us her experience about learning to overcome a learning disability. We would not have been able to have the visit if it was not for a grant Wayne Thomas received from 112 Education Foundation and our PTA.
